Melissa VanAllen

Melissa VanAllen is APA’s resident rabbit specialist and a certified Professional Animal
Scientist through the American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists [ARPAS]. She holds a
B.S. in Animal Health and Behavior from Unity Environmental University, where she graduated
summa cum laude. With advanced certifications in rabbit medicine and dentistry as well as
exotic companion animal care, Melissa specializes in the health, behavior, and rehabilitation of
small mammals. Her passion for rabbits extends to academic research and conservation work
with their wild lagomorph counterparts, pikas and hares, thus reflecting her dedication to both
individualized animal welfare and broader ecological impact.
Melissa’s emphasis on animal well-being is evident in her many roles in education and advocacy.
She is the founder of Lítil Kanína, a children’s music and literature imprint that releases books,
songs, and outreach materials crafted to promote the humane treatment of animals and foster
early connections to wildlife protection in young audiences. A university lecturer, she speaks to
students about the ethical and behavioral considerations of animal-assisted therapy. She also
owns and operates Mopsy’s Bunny Bakery, an organic rabbit treat company prioritizing
enrichment and healthy nutrition. At home in Pennsylvania, she cares for her ten rescue rabbits
with special needs, most of whom were adopted through her work as a welfare specialist and
animal shelter volunteer.
Though her primary focus is centered on small mammals, Melissa’s animal background is as
wide-ranging as it is specialized. With a strong foundation in equestrian and equine behavior, she
has acquired extensive knowledge through hands-on involvement with horses in various
capacities. Her intensive work with marine mammals, marsupials, and exotic species with
sensitive behavioral and environmental needs has further strengthened her ability to identify and
support the welfare requirements of each unique animal on set.
Beyond her animal experience, Melissa has built a career in the entertainment industry spanning
over two decades. As an internationally recognized and award-winning music artist and creative
director, she has developed a deep understanding of production dynamics, both in the spotlight
and behind the scenes. As an animal safety consultant, she blends this artistic background with
scientific expertise to offer a well-rounded perspective on animal safety in performance
environments. Melissa has carried a deep sense of responsibility since childhood to protect
sentient beings who cannot speak for themselves and is honored to turn that lifelong calling into
meaningful, purpose-driven work with APA
